Optus is offering a new solution for data-hungry prepaid mobile customers with the launch of Optus Xtra – an app which enables Android users to earn extra data or credit by viewing ads on their smartphone.
Optus Xtra gives prepaid customers the option to earn 1GB of extra data on eligible monthly plans, or $2 of extra credit on daily plans every 28 days by having ads displayed on their phone’s locked screen.
Megan Forster, Director of Product Innovation and Value Added Products at Optus said, “Our prepaid customers have told us they want to boost their data, but are also budget conscious. By giving customers the option to earn extra data through watching ads, Optus is enabling them to enjoy more of what they love, without spending an extra cent.”
“Optus Xtra, which was developed in partnership with New Zealand-based start-up, Postr, is our latest initiative to give prepaid customers maximum value from their mobile plan. Customers on eligible mobile plans also have the option to stream music on Google Play Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora and Spotify apps without using their plan’s data.”
Advertising opportunities on Optus Xtra are managed exclusively by Singtel-owned digital marketing technology company Amobee and will give brand advertisers the opportunity to leverage full screen creative executions served within a mobile phone’s most intimate environment.
Liam Walsh, Australia and New Zealand Managing Director for Amobee said, “Optus Xtra is a mobile advertising solution that puts mobile first and allows advertisers to reach audiences who have opted-in to see ads that are highly relevant to their interests and preferences.
“The Optus Xtra lock screen format lets brand advertisers target highly engaged audiences, where they are guaranteed a full screen creative canvas and 100 per cent viewability,” Mr Walsh said.
Optus Xtra is powered by Postr, a New Zealand based ad-tech company that has developed a market-leading technical platform for lock screen advertising under a partnership model with mobile network operators in NZ and South-East Asia, and now Australia.
Milan Reinartz, CEO and founder said, “We’re delighted to be able to partner with Optus in the Australian market. Their understanding of their users’ behaviour and their nimble-but-thorough approach to design and testing has resulted in an end product that we are all excited to be able to offer to users and advertisers in Australia.”
How does Optus Xtra work?
Optus Xtra displays static ads on the locked screen of a customer’s mobile phone and users may be presented with an option to view a video version of the ad or visit the brand’s website.
Customers can unlock their phone as usual when an ad is displayed on their phone screen.
Users can customise the ads they receive by nominating their interests across eight categories – beauty, employment, fashion, government and politics, health, money, technology, and travel.
The Optus Xtra app is free and can be downloaded from the Google Play store.
What do customers get with Optus Xtra?
Extra data or credit is applied when a customer with an Android handset on an eligible prepaid plan has had the Optus Xtra app active for 28 days, and has an active prepaid account balance.
Customers on My Prepaid Ultimate, My Prepaid Ultra Plus and My Prepaid Ultra are eligible to earn 1GB extra data every 28 days.
Customers on My Prepaid Daily Plus and $2 Days 4G Ready are eligible to earn $2 extra credit every 28 days.
“Optus is constantly partnering with talented members of the tech community to identify opportunities and build creative solutions for our customers. Partnering with Postr to develop Optus Xtra has enabled us to deliver an innovative solution for customers who want more data,” Ms Forster said.

Downloading the Optus Xtra app, visiting an ad’s website or viewing a video ad will incur data charges and will also trigger a day’s usage on My Prepaid Daily Plus or $2 Days 4G Ready plans. When customers view ads on their lock screen (without tapping on the ad) it may use up to 20MB of data per month.
Extra data does not rollover and must be used within 28 days.
The extra $2 credit will last for either two days or for the remaining expiry of a customer’s MyCredit balance, whichever is longer.
